*1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND*
1)Began with the preaching of Guru Nanak(founder), he has his right to teach on his personal experience of command recieved from God. He was born in 1469 in North west India. 2)Sikh religion's chief doctrins were the unity of God.the Brotherhood of man, rejection of caste and the fertility of idol worship 3)Sikhism comes from the word Sikh, which means a strong and able disciple. Developed by the influence of Hindu and Muslim religions. 4)They believe in one God (Monotheistic)
*2. RITUALS*
1)Sikh expected to get up before daylight which is called Amrit Wela and the scripts dedicated for the morning (Jap Ji Sahip) and 10 Sawaya should be read 2)When child is born, Sikh expected to take him or her to Gurdwara and take some offerings for the Guru. Hymns are read from Guru Granth Sahip and first letter of holy script is taken as indication letter to name the child. This is a Sikh's way of thanking God for avaluable gift. If baby's a girl, Kaur will be attached to her name and if it's boy, Singh is attached to nhis name.
*3. WEDDINGS(ANAND KARJ)*
1). Congregation gather and read hyms before the cermoney. Bride and groom sit in front of the Granth Sahib, before the cermoney begins, congregation joins to say prayer of begining the cermony and saying thanks to Guru 2) After joint prayers, Bride and Groom expected to stand in front of Guru Granth Sahib which Granthi reads holy hymn to explain to the couple what kind of life they are expected to live according to teachings of God. Once they have accepted the four hymns the wedding ceremoney is completed. 3) Bride is escorted by her brothers. 4) Only another Sikh may marry another Sikh 5) Child marriage is forbidden 6) Marriages may be arranged
*4. SYMBOLISM*
1)Turban *Symbol of spiritual and holiness in Sikhism *Baptism cermoney one of most important cermonies and can't be completed without wearing a turban 2)Sword *Symbol of dignity and the Sikh struggle against injustice 3)Special underwear(kaccha) *Symbol to signify srlf control and chastity *Made of cotton
*5. SYMBILISM CONT*
1)Steel bracelet(kara) *Symbol to remind the wearer of restraint in their actions and remembrance of God at all times. *each of the 5 k's identifies members of the khaisa
2)Kanga: *Comb, symbol of hygience and discipline *Expected to wash and comb their hair as a matter of regurary self-discipline
*6. BELIEFS*
1)There is ony one God 2)Rise early before the sun and meditate, experincing union with God. 3)Earn one's living righteously: work hard and honestly and never live off of the others, but give to others from the fruit of one's labor 4)Share with others: ones home is always open to all 5)Re-incarnation:karma and Salvation, all creatures have souls that pass to other bodies upon death untill liberation is achieved 6)Humanhood: All Humans are equal. 7)Personal Sacrifice: Be prepared to give your life for all surpreme principles. 8)Positive Attitude about life. 9)Believe in neither heaven nor hell.
*7. VALUES*
1) Equality: All Humans Are=before God. 2) God's spirit: all creatures have God's spirit and must be properly respected 3) Personal Right: every person has a right to life but this right is restricted. 4)Actions Count: Salvation is obtained by one's actions-Good deeds, remembrance of God, etc.
*8. SIKHISM TODAY*
1)Sikhism can be found all over India and elswhere in the world. 2)Men and women can be identified by their practice of alwayes wearing a turban to cover their iong hair 3)Not all people named Sigh are necessarily Sikhs. 4)Currently there are 23million Sikhs in the world making it the fifth largest religion. 5)Approximately 19 million live in india and larger population can be found in the United kindom, Canada, and USA.
*9. DIETARY*
1)Don't eat meat used in religious Sacrifice or Heal meat, since they believe the method of killing to be cruel They believe that smoking cigaretties and drinking Alcoholic beverages deters a person from God's way of life, so they avoid these practices. 2)No strict dietary requirments, but many Sikhs are vegitarians or don't eat beef. *meat is only fermitted if it's Jhatka, the animal is killed instantaneously with one stroke. *Sikhs aren't required to fast, they are to to eat moderation. *Sikh's don't eat in restraunts that are excusively Halal or Kosher.
*10. SIKHISM*
1)God is love and love is God As God cannot confined, restricted or limitted to any particular creed,cult,race similary Religion og love cannot be restricted or confined in geographical limits and boundaries. Sri Guru Nanak Sahib's Religion of love is cosmic and universal in it's appeal, holy folds and dimensions.
2)It is a religion of perpect and universal Love totality free man-made barriers of color, caste, created and status. It is a religion which radiates with a deep thirst for the Divine and with the highest gospel of purity of heart, mind, body, speech and deeds.
3)It is a Religionwhich establishes brotherhood of the whole global community irrespective of color, caste, creed, race, and nationality purely on the basis and foundation of love and equality, all being the children of the same lovable God. |
